Q&A: Is it dangerous to hang curtains in front of an electrical outlet?

Question by boardposting: Is it dangerous to hang curtains in front of an electrical outlet?
Is it dangerous to hang long curtains in front of an electrical outlet, where the curtains may touch the outlet? I have heard that there is a danger of fire, because a spark given off by the outlet could catch fire to the curtains if they are near or touching.

  1. yes, it is very dangerous. I know 2 people that lost everything they had because of that very exact thing. Don’t do it, by all means, If you must hang curtains there, hang short ones.

  2. If electricity archs out of the outlet, say from a partially inserted metal object, then there is a slim chance that a curtain could reach its flash point and ignite. Otherwise, very slim chance – outlet don’t just emit sparks.

  3. they have plastic insert made for plugs, child safety. just put a couple of them in your duplex receptacles and hang away.

  4. Yes, No, Maybe.

Gven the dodgy wiring in the USA it’s probably not a good idea to hang curtains over an outlet just in case of potential fire hazards.

A single spark generally won’t set curtains on fire if they have natural fibres in them such as cotton, wool or hemp. If they are rayon or other man made fibres there’s a slight chance fire may occur but it would be pretty remote.

Using a switched outlet will negate the issue. A quick google found nothing to indicate any fire hazard. However there may be local laws that say otherwise. Check with your local building code authority to have 100% peace of mind.

  5. Use shorter curtains. Also good to keep curtains up away from base board heaters, if you have any. At least 8 in. away from source of heat. As for the person who mentioned the plasitc plug protectors for children-that is a wise idea if you really want longer curtains. Otherwise, short ones.
    Take care.
