It was a mom with two kids. She wrote a check out for the exact amount of the food and left two shower curtain rings. One was shaped like a frog and one was shaped like a duck. They were not connected.

That is bizarre but what a great story. Also, what kind of restaurant lets you write checks? I suspect that check will probably bounce.

I know it seems bizaar, one may be inclined to think she was just being rude, maybe she was, if not I can understand why she’d do that.
Maybe she didn’t have any money to leave a tip, nor to be taking her kids out for dinner….was being paid the next day hence the cheque; it can take a day or two [or longer] before the money is taken out of your account. If living pay to pay you have to make sacrifices if you want to have a meal out [for a treat], every penny counts.
Or she wrote it knowing it would bounce [still doesn't mean she left the rings to be a 'B'].
Leaving rings shaped as critters for a tip tells me, she wanted to show her kids that even if you don’t have money to give [tip] you can still do something. Maybe she had them select something from a box of trinkets before leaving home, or had them in her purse for some reason.
It’s also possible they weren’t meant as a tip, the kids were playing with them & simply forgot them on the table.
I use to work in the hospitality industry, you’d be surprised what ppl leave in place of tips. I felt it was better than ppl who’d stiff despite having cash too tip, that was insulting [especially if they came in regularly]. The odd person did it to be rude, most didn’t, some even left a note apologizing to the server for not being able to leave cash.
There are a few reasons why she may have done it. What type of restaurant is it btw, and is your cousin sure they were meant as a tip?
