Drappeggio in Ercolano Liz Rideal, video projection, 7.5 minutes, 2008 In Drappeggio in Ercolano, Rideal collates footage of washing hung out to dry from balconies seen from the road of the Mercato di Pugliano, Ercolano, where vendors deal exclusively in recycled clothing and furs. Her focus is on the material of fabric; the everyday draperies of sheets, curtains and table cloths, drying in the typical Neapolitan fashion of seried ranks, suggestive of the work of American minimalist painters; Agnes Martin and Robert Ryman. The relentless and time immemorial task of washing and drying is emphasized when the film was projected onto the surface of Rome's ancient aqueduct walls. Water; symbol of the successful city and essential for the cleaning process, is celebrated through the elegiac movement of sheets and lace curtains as they appear to waft in a gentle breeze. Rideal is a London artist who works in a broad range of media, from photography and video to mirror, tapestry and etched glass. She was the Wingate Rome Scholar in the Fine Arts at the British School of Rome, 2008-9. Her large-scale public work include building wraps and film projections onto landscape and buildings. Represented by Gallery 339, Philadelphia and HackelBury Fine Art, London, her recent UK outdoor film and stills projections were at Compton Verney and Bart's, London. I'm a " Straight Man " who was raised with a Mother who loved country style in our Home, and Lace was everywhere, and YES, I love the look, so I want to know, if I we're to hang Lace Window Treatments in my windows, is it " Too Feminine " looking ?
