Question by run4fun: Width to hang a curtain rod?
I have rounded drywall corners on the sides of my window, no frame. I was wondering how far on each side of the top corners do I mount the curtain rod brackets. Obviously far enough to cover the window, but exactly how far is the norm? Thanks for the advice!

we use a rule of thumb.. based on how wide the gathered up curtains are.. but usually we do it as big as it is.. then 'look' at the job to see what it looks like.... if its pleasing to the eye, then its ok..
if you think it looks wrong, then make an adjustment..

Question by Susan B: How do I go about hanging curtain rods?
I have a living room window that, from windowsill to windowsill, is 74" long. I recently purchased an extendable curtain rod where you mount some brackets to the wall and the pole rests in the brackets. The curtains get threaded through the pole. I need to know how far apart the brackets should be mounted on the wall from the window sill and how high up above the window they need to be hung (in inches). There must be some kind of general rule for this....please help! The curtains are not going to be very heavy. Warm regards.

Honestly I dont think theres a rule of thumb I think in general you do what looks good. Ask a friend(s) to hold it up whil you look at it and decide. Its much like hanging pictures theres a general vicinity but the details are of preference.

Question by JENNIFER: What can I do about a bent bracket for a curtain rod?
I have curtain rods with the decorative edges and brackets holding them up. My children pull on the curtains and the rods are bent and coming out of the wall. I have drywall. I could just bend it back but how can I secure it really well?

Get some toggle bolts to secure the brackets to the wall and try to bend your curtain rod back to it's shape. The rod will still bend if your kids hang off the curtains but the brackets will stay up!

Measuring for Drapery and Curtain Rod Hardware

Measure the width of your window treatments, taking into account if you want to mount the hardware on the wall or on the window trim. Allow 1 1/2 inches to 3 inches on each side of the window for the curtains are completely open.Be sure to consider wall space for finials. To make the window appear larger, mount the curtain 4 inches above the window trim, and allow the curtain rod width to extend 3 inches on either side of the actual window width. The length should be measured to the point you want the bottom to stop, at the sill, 4 inches below the sill, or to the floor. You can also have your draperies "puddle" on the floor.

To determine what bracket you need, measure how far off the wall your curtain rods needs to be to clear window frames and sills. This will be the "projection" your brackets need in order to clear the objects. Most curtain and traverse rods have bracket extenders available if needed.

The amount of fabric you will need for your curtain or drapery will depend on the fullness you want. For a tailored look, the width of the window. For the standard look, you will need 1.5 times the width of the window. For a full look, plan on 3 times the width of the window.

Layered treatments: When you want to use two or more different fabrics to cover your window. These will require a double or triple curtain rod or traverse rod, or a combination of the two.The glass side fabric should be on half inch shorter the the over treatment (room side fabric).
