Beaded Curtains

Barbara Streisand once said that she never throws any of her clothes away. Her reason for this, she explained, was that all fashions, eventually, come back. Thus, if she was to hold on to a tank top, for instance, in time the fashion would return and she’d get a greater (and more authentic) return on the money it originally cost her to purchase the “retro” apparel. This has already happened with certain fashions, such as bell bottoms, which have been “in” again for over ten years now. So it is also with beaded curtains.

Beaded curtains, while not a fashion for the body, denote a fashion sense to the curtain’s owner, and are slowly returning to homes with a force to be reckoned with, if a bit slowly. One of the great things about these curtains formed of beads is that they really spice up the décor of one’s home. They do not only this, however. They also reflect a viewpoint, a philosophy of sorts that some such curtain owners may be unaware of.

Beaded curtains, while loosely termed curtains, are really something separate, and were never seen before their creation many years ago. While acting as a border between rooms, these curtains do little to block drafts or maintain temperature variances between rooms, as ordinary curtains do. Further, they don’t stop a person’s sight from entering a secondary room well.

However, there is an almost magical aspect to beaded curtains that should be recognized. Aside from basic aesthetic fulfillment, these curtains symbolize a loose separation that comes from the verity of different rooms being just that -different and in separate places in space, yet not in time, as one can view both rooms that are delineated by the curtain, simultaneously.

This idea is one that might appeal to anyone interested in Carlos Castaneda, Shamanism, or even quantum physics with its meta-mystical attributes. This is the reason that these curtains held such a sway over the baby boomers of the 1960’s and 70’s. In addition, there is the most obvious aspect to these beads on strings: not only are they unique and interesting, but they also tend to consume the eyes in fascination, and that’s always a good thing.
